Tech Intersect #151: Paul Grewal on The Coinbase Wells Notice and SEC Regulations on Crypto
Kudos, Questions, Comments? Send it here.
On March 9, 2023, I met Paul Grewal, the Chief Legal Officer of Coinbase, while giving testimony before the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology and Inclusion. When the news came out that Coinbase received a Wells Notice from the SEC, I knew I had to sit down with Paul to get a better understanding of the situation.
This week, episode 151 of the Tech Intersect™ Podcast is about the Coinbase Wells notice and SEC regulations around crypto (or lack thereof).
You need a S.E.C.U.R.E. Advantage! I've got the keys.
In this free masterclass, you will learn to spot shadowy scams, ferret out frauds, and separate fact from fiction so you can buy, trade and store crypto safely, securely, and swiftly and secure the freedom you deserve. Save your seat.
Paul Grewal is the CLO of Coinbase, a digital currency wallet where merchants and consumers can transact with new digital currencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. Paul is responsible for legal compliance, global intelligence risk management, and government relations groups. Previously, Grewal was vice president and deputy general counsel at Facebook and is also a former U.S. magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
Some of the talking points Paul and I go over in this episode include:
- Paul’s unusual path into the crypto space.
- Why the Wells notice is a disappointment - but not a shock- to Coinbase.
- Staking services and whether they are connected to securities.
- How regulations can be adapted for the crypto space and made easy to follow and understand.
